\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
The Egyptian Mediterranean coast covers a distant of nearly 1200 km long that produces an annual average of 50 thousand ton of valuable marine species. The main fishing gears operated in the area are trawling, purse"=seining and lining especially long and hand lining. European hake \textit{Merluccius merluccius }represents one of the most important fishes in the Egyptian sector of the Mediterranean. It mainly caught by trawlers and form about \mbox{4\,\%} of the total trawl catch. A total of 1920 European hake was collected from the commercial catch of the Egyptian sector of Mediterranean between July 2006 and April 2009. Total length ranged between 14 and \mbox{67\,cm} while total weight varied from 21 to 2300 g. The length"=weight relationship parameters were a = 0.0067 and b = 3.026. The age distribution based on otolith readings, covered age groups 0 to VIII. The parameters of the von Bertalanffy growth function in length were K = 0.28 year$^{-1}$, L\&\#8734; = \mbox{71.5\,cm} and t0 = -0.35 years. The rates of total (Z) and natural mortality (M) were 1.08 and 0.35 year$^{-1}$, respectively. The fishing mortality (F) was 0.73 year$^{-1}$ and exploitation rate (E) of 0.68 indicated that the population has been heavily exploited. The estimated total length at first capture (Lc) was \mbox{19.76\,cm}, while the total length at \mbox{50\,\%} maturity (Lm) was \mbox{30.95\,cm}. Yield per recruit analysis revealed over"=fished stock conditions particularly due to small fish being effectively unprotected by the current minimum size regulations, and to reach a target such as F0.1 the reduction of current F should be of about \mbox{30\,\%}.}
