The increasing rate of population growth and consequent pressures from competing socioeconomic demands for land have led to the intensification of agricultural systems in Sub Saharan Africa. This has had diverse implications on agricultural systems and on the livelihood of the rural households. In northern Nigeria, agricultural intensification has resulted in soil degradation and nutrient depletion which have become a menace to soil fertility and agricultural productivity that threatens rural livelihoods.The application of inorganic fertiliser and organic matter has been considered as optimal strategy for addressing these problems.This study used Tobit model to assess the adoption and intensity of use of inorganic fertiliser and manure. Multi"=stage sampling technique was used to collect data from 400 households in selected villages of Kaduna State in the Northern Guinea Savannah of Nigeria. The results showed that availability of labour, social capital; livestock and asset ownership as well as extension contacts were positively significant in determining farmers' preference for inorganic fertiliser. On the other hand, farmers' adoption decisions for manure were positively and significantly influenced by availability of labour, off"=farm incomes and extension contacts. However, farm size had a negative significant influence on both technologies. The study indicated that creating incentives for farmers to become members of farmers' unions would increase adoption and use intensity of inorganic fertiliser. Policy intervention that institutionalizes micro"=finance in the rural area and increased draft power and equipment for fertiliser and manure application would favour increased use of both inputs. Moreover, efforts should be made to produce organic manure \textit{in~situ} and insert pastoralists into exchange networks of the community. }
