\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Due to globalisation smallholder farmers are now more than ever before under pressure to produce high quality outputs for reaching the global markets for not being neglected. But in reaching a high quality production they are challenging numerous problems. These problems refer to market failures of providing them with e.g. land, credit, inputs, and services. Often smallholder farmers are facing a bad reputation among other stakeholders as they are seen as unattractive, untrustworthy, and non"=loyal value chain participants and therefore neglected. It is difficult for them to enter successful and sustainable alliances which increase their competiveness and their revenues. To measure the influence of reputation on the development of the smallholder swine production in Colombia (Popayán region), a Reputation Analysis was conducted in March 2010, using semi"=quantitative interviews for all participants of the smallholder swine value chain in this region. First results show that reputation has a great influence on the performance of the smallholders' business. Smallholders with a high reputation tend to be better involved in the value chain than those with a low reputation. Therefore they have better access to inputs, financing and extension. As more trustworthy partners they are more likely to receive credit for purchasing inputs and for extending their business. Concerning innovations they are seen as opinion leaders and for this, they are among the first receiving formal extension and help in problem solving processes. A good reputation results in long"=lasting and trust"=driven alliances which lead to a better performance and a higher income of these stakeholders. As influential persons in their networks their performance represents a driving factor for the development of other actors' business. By achieving a higher reputation smallholders in the value chain might be able to get inputs and knowledge for reaching more developed markets. The final analysis will be performed within the coming months.}
