\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are a class of organic compounds containing two or more fused aromatic rings of carbon and hydrogen atoms. Sixteen unsubstituted PAHs, some of which are considered as being possible or probable human carcinogens, have been listed by the environmental protection agency of the USA (USEPA) as priority pollutants. Benzo[\textit{a}]pyrene, is considered as the most carcinogenic component among the above mentioned compounds. This compound is a side product of incomplete combustion of fossil fuels, wood and organic compounds such as organic wastes. To investigate and determination of benzo[\textit{a}]pyrene contamination in surface water in north of Iran, Babolrod river has done assessment for ecological importance. In this study water samples from Babolrod river, were taken monthly during two season (summer and fall) from province Mazandaran in order to investigate benzo[\textit{a}]pyrene pollutions in surface water. In this survey after transferring samples to laboratory and processing, they were analysed by GC-1000 (Dany model). Determination and revelation were done with FID (flame ionisation detector) detector that is suitable for organic compounds with aromatic rings. Extraction method in this survey was SPE(Solid"=phase extraction). The results of this study indicated that the maximum concentration of benzo[\textit{a}]pyrene compound in input water of Babolrod river was 1/03 ppb in august and the maximum level of this compound in discharge water of this river was 3/99 ppb in September because of increasing consumption of fossil fuels in this area. Also the result showed that benzo[\textit{a}]pyrene contamination in discharge water was significantly high than input water of this river. On the other hand, during summer and fall the mean values of benzo[\textit{a}]pyrene in comparison with the US EPA permissible levels for drinking  water were significantly high than the standards during this time zone.}
