\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
In 1899, an expedition led by Prof. Kossmat F. took photos of top parts of the Scantmountain range, which is the highest situated area of Socotra Island. After rediscovery of these photographs in the Vienna museum archive, an idea originated to find a locality photographed 105 years ago. On the basis of these photos it would be possible to compare dynamics of the development of local \textit{Dracaena cinnabari} stands in the course of a known time series. As late as 2004, it managed to localise a place in mountains which served for taking the old photograph. Only after repeated attempts, specialists from Mendel University of Agriculture and Forestry in Brno were successful in this effort.

However, different photographic techniques did not make possible to obtain quite identical photos. Particular proportions of photographs are different which makes their comparison more difficult. Therefore, it was necessary to determine reliably identifiable points between which limits of a sample plot could be led. On the area of such a sample plot, the number of trees of Dracaena cinnabari was determined. Further, the total area of crowns was determined by a relatively accurate and simple planimetric method (on a graph paper). This method appeared to be practical and preferable to the originally considered image analysis using the Image Tool programme applicable rather for larger areas. With respect to different ap"=parent size of a sample plot on both compared photos the total area of crowns was expressed in per cent compared with the total area of a sample plot on particular photos.

Comparing the number of trees on particular photos, ie 199 in 1899 and 111 in 2004, the decrease of dragon trees by \mbox{44.22\,\%} is evident.  }
