Homegardens as important sites of on"=farm biodiversity conservation also are contexts for introduction and domestication of plants from natural habitats. In order to characterise Iranian homegardens, a multidisciplinary study was carried out in Gachsaran County, southwest of Iran during April to September 2008.  Altogether 192 households from 11 villages into two zones (5 villages from Khamin mountainous protected area and 6 villages around Basht town with plain"=hilly topography) were studied. Although homegardens in plain --- hilly topography villages were more diverse and in protected area, homegardens were less developed, some wild plants from surrounding environment carried to homegardens by farmers and conserved especially in outside villages. Some species \textit{e.g. Quercus brantii }Lindl., \textit{Amygdalus} spp., \textit{Ziziphus spina"=christi }Willd., \textit{Z. nummularia} L. and \textit{Myrthus communis} L. were conserved by local farmers for different utilisations such as food, instruments, construction, etc. Some species such as \textit{Pyrus syriaca} Boiss., \textit{Celtis caucassica} Willd., \textit{Mentha longifolia }Huds., \textit{Rhus coriaria} L., wild varieties of \textit{Ficus carica} L., and \textit{Pistacia atlantica} Desf., were occasionally cultivated through their vegetative and natal organs in homegardens. \textit{Pyrus syriaca}, has some supremacies like vegetative propagation and tolerance to drought situations which make it adaptative, and   it considered as a horticultural fruit tree in rural farming systems. \textit{Rhus coriaria} may be considered as a regional underutilised crop because its cover dramatically has been decreased during last few decades. Homegardens were more developed and diverse in outside protected area village, because of more accessibility of infrastructures and also more contiguity to urban centre and accommodated more plants from wild environment.   }
