\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Food security is a fundamental concept for elaborate development strategies, particularly in the sub-Saharan Africa. It can be defined as access for all individuals at any time to sufficient nourishing food for healthy and active life. Food and nutrition security remain Africa's most fundamental challenge. With more than 200million people in Africa being undernourished, food and nutrition issues remain one of the biggest challenges for sustainable development in Africa. Food security is therefore an important issue that will for a long time be faced by policy makers particularly in the world's poorest countries with potentially large population growth. This study was designed to carry out an evaluation of food insecurity status as well as an assessment of the determinants of the severity of food insecurity in rural households in Kwara State. Kwara State is divided into four agro"=ecological zones by the Kwara State Agricultural Development Project. A two"=stage simple random sampling technique was employed in collecting data used for the study. The tools of analyses employed in this study are the Food Security Index (FSI) and the Tobit regression model. The study shows that \mbox{65.45\,\%} of the entire rural households in Kwara State were food insecure with a mean daily per capita energy consumption of 1403.56 Kcal. The result of the Tobit regression model identifies that the significant factors ($p < 0.05$) affecting the severity of food insecurity in the rural areas of Kwara State are the adjusted household size, food crop production loss and rural households' consumption of cereals, legumes, root/tuber products, animal products, fats/oil and fruits. In order to improve the situation, this study recommends the need for increased production and improved processing of cereals and tubers among the rural households. }
