\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Grouping of small"=scale farmers has been accepted as a means to strengthen their position in the market economy. Mostly under the influence and authority of development organisations and governmental agencies democratically organised farmer group structures have therefore been introduced in Uganda on a large scale. In 2009 and early 2010 a novel approach, using four different stakeholder's perspectives for every group, was employed to explore the current situation of banana farmer marketing groups in the major banana growing regions. Group leaders, group members, non"=group members and produce buyers were interviewed using mostly quantitative questionnaires in order to acquire data relevant for a description of the role Ugandan banana farmer marketing groups play locally as well as in domestic and international trade. The findings confirm the existence of such groups in Western and Eastern Uganda. The degree of efficiency in which the groups can make use of the advantages of group work varies especially regarding production levels, timing and most importantly joint sales of quantities pooled. Need for aid from the affiliated development institutions depends on the groups' maturity and the leaders' knowledge, experience and networks. Group members were largely satisfied with their memberships. However, acquisition or initiation of new projects or more flexible group purposes, democratic group spirit and competence of leaders were indicated as areas in need of improvement. Buyers indicated that they would like to buy banana on credit to bypass liquidity shortages. Farmers who are not members in a group said that they prefer selling alone to avoid hassles among group members and corruption. Some of them additionally consider their production levels as too low to participate, others say that they are unaware of any groups around. Although organised, some groups are passive in their given mode of operation and only search for purposes beyond following organisations through the reception of aid, training and advice. Many of them have not had a chance to experience the potential power of grouping in financial benefits from improved marketing.}
