The Andean páramo, a unique ecosystem located between 3000 and \mbox{4200\,m} a.s.l, is at a crossroads. While simultaneously its role in biodiversity conservation, water regulation, and carbon storage is growing more valuable, there is an increasing demand for potatoes and milk production. Although the Colombian environmental policy is unfavourable to farming in the páramo ecosystem and is centreed on the creation of protected areas, this study relies on the hypothesis that an integrated management of the páramo is possible, and that family farming can be an engine for its sustainable development. 



In this paper, we show how a multi"=scale approach combining agronomy, geography and management sciences, can help to identify areas of flexibility within the páramo farms for the introduction of technical and organisational changes that combine conservation and sustainable livelihoods. An analysis of local farming systems was undertaken to highlight the drivers of land use changes by taking into consideration farmers' objectives and strategies, and to identify options for allowing farmers to remain in the páramo while simultaneously meeting environmental objectives.



The field research took place in the Colombian Rabanal massif (western cordillera), in the area surrounding the expanding central protection zone which will soon include major areas used for agriculture and settlements. It aims to provide inputs to enhance the negotiation between local communities and environmental authorities.



For decades, potato and dual"=purpose cattle production have been the main stay of family farms. More recently, there has been an expansion of an alternative system where the land is rented for a year for capital"=intensive potato production followed by several years of grazing. Family farmers rely on it to maintain the forage potential of their pastures, which is critical to sustain their activities. However, this newer system is in direct confrontation with national environmental policy. The research suggests that family farmers should be considered as central actors to improve the integration agriculture"=environment. The building of a typology of parcels, based on the logic of land use of the agricultural users, helped to spatialize both the environmental problems and the perspectives for action to develop more sustainable farming practices.}
