Indigenous pigs in Nigeria are predominantly (\mbox{78\,\%}) found in the subhumid zone of central and southern guinea savannah zone of Nigeria, mostly managed under extensive system(harsh and resource poor environment).The performance characteristics of this animal is an indication of adaptation to the adverse condition.A study on reproductive performance of the indigenous pigs among 620 small holder pig herd in the subhumid guinea savannah zone was conducted for three years in two states of Nasarawa and Benue in central Nigeria. Reproductive  data of 420 female pigs 3690 piglets was studied between January 2006 and November 2008.Field visitation, questionnaire and data recording was used to generate the data.Average herd structure per herd was 13.42, litter size at birth and at weaning were 8.62 and  5.98.  age at first litter was 13.98 month while average age at first mating by young boar was 11.8 month. Sows recorded more conception during the dry season compared to rainy season. Mortality was higher in the rainy season recording about \mbox{28\,\%} mortality as against \mbox{15\,\%} in the dry season. From the study it has shown that improvement in management such as provision of improve feeding , housing,health care and selection will enhance productivity and reduce litter losses.The indigenous pigs have good chances of improving the socio economic status of the rural populace because they are hardy resistant to common infectous disease moderate weight which can be easily purchased by the people thus there is need to develop sustainable breeding and improvement strategy for the development of the indigenous pig in this zone. }
