Recent climatic events and poor fish catch technology have significantly contributed to the decline in the quantity of catch fish in Nigeria; while the need to augment local fish supply through importation with hard earned foreign reserve have been inevitable. Presently, aquaculture is fast gaining increasing relevance as a way of reducing the present fish demand"=supply gap nationally. Specifically, catfish production has shown great promises in terms of geographic spread, climatic suitability and acceptability in Nigeria. In other to boost aquaculture production through this fish species, it becomes pertinent to investigate the key factor that affects its consumption among different socio"=economic and income strata in Ibadan metropolis of Oyo state, Nigeria. The study utilised stratified random sampling to obtain information from 120 households using well structured questionnaire.The respondents were classified into low, medium and high income group based on infrastructural developments in their respective residential locations. The Logit regression analysis was used to identify the important determinants of catfish consumption. 



Results showed that \mbox{90.1\,\%} of the population samples consume fish. The result also showed that \mbox{42\,\%} of the population sample spent below N$_{2}$000 on fish per month\mbox{.75\,\%} out of the population that consume fish also consume catfish. Most of the catfish consumers (\mbox{56\,\%}) were female. Catfish consumers between the age 20--30years recorded the highest percentage of \mbox{38.67\,\%}, while respondents with age above 60yrs recorded the least percentage (\mbox{9.33\,\%}). The distribution of catfish consumers according to their educational status showed that most of the people (\mbox{88\,\%}) in the study area had post secondary education. The lowest household size below 5 captured \mbox{72\,\%} of the catfish consumers in the study area. The result also showed that the highest income level above N$_{2}$50000 per month was captured by \mbox{6.67\,\%} of the population sample that consume catfish\mbox{.64\,\%} of the catfish consumers, spent below N$_{2}$0000 on food per month. The Logit analysis showed that the amount spent on other types of fish and amount spent on other non"=fish proteins showed positive significant relationship with the probability of consuming catfish. It is recommended that producers should take advantage of the wide acceptability of catfish and explore all avenues so as their present level of production. }
