In many mountainous areas of Asia, the trend of natural resource degradation and socio"=economic development vary in the different spatial gradients of the area due to the differentiation of resource availabilities, management, and the condition of infrastructure and access to market. The best option of achieving sustainable management of natural resources and socioeconomic development is to find out the association of socioeconomic and biophysical condition in the different spatial gradients of an area. Then location"=based problem solving strategies can be tested in producing best possible recommendations for the future. This study presents a combination of socioeconomic and spatial methodologies to rural system analysis, modelling and strategies testing in two mountainous watersheds from Nepal and Thailand. Biophysical analyses were carried out using RS/GIS technology. Socioeconomic conditions were assessed based on a survey with in"=depth interviews. Both analyses were linked and integrated with each other and the relations between socioeconomic conditions and resources degradation and development were analyses, modeled and future problem solving as well as natural strategies was tested. Results of land and water resources assessment in both cases shows that agricultural land use increased at the cost of loss of forestland. Results of spatial distribution of living standard parameters including farm family income, food availability shows the decreasing trend as the elevation increases. The strategic water availability under different development pathways in Upper Ing Watershed Thailand at a watershed scale were assessed using the GIS based spatial water budget model. Spatial and temporal variations in location of stream and water yields from different part of the watershed were investigated. Agricultural water need and possible extraction was assessed. Impact of land use and climate change on stream water availabilities and their possible impact on agricultural land use and ultimately to the socioeconomic development of the people were tested and presented.}
