Gendered rural household space underpins meal security, food security, and sustainable rural development within the matrix of traditional culture in the Southwest (SW) Nigeria. Food production in SW Nigeria largely depends on the small scale farmers in the rural areas; majority of who are women. The paper aimed to discuss the relationship between gendered rural household space and meal security; from the perspectives of the gender relations in accessibility to rural resources, household decision"=making, agricultural production, meal preparation and distribution, and analyse the implications on food security and sustainable rural development in SW Nigeria. Sales of the best quality farm produce is a usual strategy for higher monetary value among the poor farmers in SW Nigeria, while the low quality farm produce are usually reserved for family consumptions. Traditionally, the decisions about what and when to sell farm produce in the SW Nigerian rural household are taken by men. Rural women are responsible for marketing of farm produce and processing of the food crops into meal and meal distribution among household members. Meal is traditionally distributed unequally along gender line in a typical rural household in the SW Nigeria, with the women and female children usually at the disadvantage end. In addition, the inadequate post"=harvest drying and storage facilities available among the SW Nigerian farmers, makes availability of meal in a typical rural household in"=adequate and irregular on yearly basis. The quality, quantity, and regularity of the meal taken by rural household members influence their health and economic productivity; especially agricultural production, which is most often carried out manually using family labour. Availability of gender responsive rural household space could enhance rural household meal security in SW Nigeria. Meal secured rural households are significant stakeholders in the attainment of food security and sustainable rural development in SW Nigeria.
