Georesources are an important factor for the sustainable development of Africa. The sustainable use of these resources is a key issue, especially with regard to the growing population, rapid urban development and the rising demand for better infrastructure and services in Africa. Numerous data and information are/have already been collected through diverse initiatives by both African countries and European organisations collectively. But an archive of Africa related geoscientific observation data which primarily need to be shared by African partners is still missing up to now. 



The African-European Georesources Observation System (AEGOS, www.aegos.org) which is supported by European Commission 7\textsuperscript{th} Framework Program aims at designing a pan-African infrastructure of interoperable data and user"=oriented services. This system will support the sustainable use of georesources (mineral resources, groundwater, and geothermal energy) in Africa. In the first project phase (12/2008--05/2011), 23 partners (geological surveys, ministries and schools of mines, international organisations) from Europe and Africa define the establishment of a partners' network, the development of operational procedures for data management, and the design of user"=oriented products and services. A key towards the success of AEGOS depends significantly on strengthening the capacity building activities to improve the qualifications of the personnel which are often insufficient in many African countries. 



The study presents the overall objectives of the project and common strategies for capacity building and training needed for the implementation and operation of the AEGOS infrastructure. The results of a gap analyses based on required and existing knowledge and skills as well as deviated recommendations for training in the fields of information technology, data management, data processing, end user service and operational management are shown.



Thus, the AEGOS project will improve the sustainable use of georesources in Africa not only through the support of technological innovations but also through investing in human resources. This approach is very important since building human capacities is generally identified as key element of the sustainable management of resources.
