The   republic of Kenya is endowed with vast water resources, namely; the Indian Ocean, inland lakes, numerous rivers and man"=made lakes. These water bodies have fish production potential of over 150,000 metric tonnes per year. Although the country earns about 4 billion shillings from the export of fish and fishery product, the total value of the sector is about 8 billion shillings annually. Therefore, the sector is of strategic importance in national food security.  The fisheries sector in Kenya consists of three sub"=sectors, namely; inland fisheries, marine fisheries and aquaculture. The inland fisheries comprise Lakes Victoria, Turkana, Naivasha,  Baringo and other smaller lakes such as Jipe and Chala, rivers and dams. The marine sub"=sector is made of the inshore, offshore and the Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ). Aquaculture which has remained at subsistence level since independence was recently boosted when the government listed fish farming as one of the key activities in the Economic Stimulus Programme (ESP). It is anticipated that the stimulus programme will provide employment to the youths, source of income to the farmers and source of affordable protein to many Kenyans.  Lake Victoria is the major source of fish for local consumption and export, contributing over \mbox{90\,\%} to the total national fish production while the marine fisheries only contributes about \mbox{5\,\%} to the total fish production. The fisheries industry in Kenya plays an important role in the economy by providing employment and income to over 2.3 million people. Although the contribution of the sector to the Gross Development Product (GDP) is estimated to only \mbox{0.5\,\%}, this could be as high as \mbox{5\,\%} if all the inputs to the fisheries production and value addition are included. The contribution of the fishery industry to local incomes, subsistence and nutrition is extremely important as most of this contribution occur in areas that have the highest incidences of poverty in the country. This paper discusses the contribution of the fisheries sector in Kenya towards food security and poverty alleviation.}
