\textbf{Abstract}
\begin{abstract}
\normalsize{
Brazil experiences the so"=called nutritional transition where there is an inversion in the distribution patterns of nutritional problems among a given population, characterising a shift from malnutrition to obesity condition. Obesity has been considered as a nutritional problem associated with high incidence of Non Communicable diseases, thereby influencing the morbidity and mortality rates of the population in Brazil. In this context, at least \mbox{40\,\%} of adult Brazilian population presents overweight and at the same time, obesity represents \mbox{8.9\,\%} of adult men and \mbox{13.1\,\%} of adult women. At the same time, rural studies concerning nutritional issues are rare in Brazil and yet there is no data available about the nutritional situation of the rural communities in Brazil making a call to this topic. Based on this, a cross"=sectional study was carried out in two rural settlements located in Tocantins state, situated in the north of the country. The survey involves men and women (above 18 years old) and comprises a total of 108 individuals (58 women and 50 men), who accepted to join the study. Anthropometric measures and dietetic data were collected, and the results reflect the epidemiological transition characteristics of developing countries that are still experienced by Brazil. The results point towards a prevalence of overweight, which reached \mbox{38.9\,\%} of the whole sample, being higher among women. In addition, overweight and obese adults together sum over \mbox{60\,\%} of the sample. There was no difference between energy intakes of euthrophic and overweight groups, but physical activity seemed to be a crucial factor to the nutritional status determination. The data points to the need for prevention and control educational programs as well as health services in the communities in question, with a special emphasis on dietary habits involving not only the regional health care professionals, but the population in general as information proliferating agents.
