The food industry is the single largest manufacturing sector in the EU and one of the pillars of the EU economy. It is the world's largest exporter. In Europe, Germany is the second largest food producer with sales of 150 billion Euros in 2009. Moreover the importance of the food industry in total manufacturing is growing, food production and food processing nowadays are economic activities in which local and global strategies are interconnected. On the other hand, local production systems are competing on the global market by producing specific quality goods or by producing innovative products.







Against this background, the paper reviews, describes, and evaluates the current situation of the food industry in Germany with respect to its spatial structure on regional level. The spatial analysis provides the tools and methods to represent and analyse these important activities and the competitive dynamic of the food industry within Germany's regions. We ask whether they are spatially concentrate, which local regions are growing or declining, and how the role of rural areas in the food sector. Thereby we identify the competitiveness of the food sector and discuss the significant developments in the industry and analyse further key trends and issues.







This research conducts a location quotient and shift"=share analysis using employment statistics data across a period of six years - 2007 and 2001. Analyses complimented by a GIS analysis. GIS procedures help to differentiate concentrations in regions and also to mapping county"=level employment by food industry as well as changes between these years. Data categories are based on the standard industrial classification (SIC) codes that are food related (two"=digit SIC) considered for analysis. The food manufacturing sector data includes 24 different SIC sub"=codes and in 429 regions in Germany.







The conceptual framework is constructed to identify the variables and components needed to make the computations. The four employment variables identified include: total national employment figures, total national industry employment estimates, and local industry employment data for two separate years. The components identified in the conceptual framework are the national growth, competitive share, industrial mix, and total economic change components.}
