Climate change (CC) poses a serious threat to food security of millions of pastoral families that survive under extensive livestock production systems. The primary concern is how to mitigate the effect of CC on pastoral communities, whose livelihoods depend almost entirely on climate"=sensitive resources. Our presentation discusses a conceptual framework for the development of a functional CC adaptation livestock database system as a repository of vital information on CC adaptation for low"=input livestock production systems in dry"=lands. Detailed methodology emphasises a multi"=stakeholder involvement in project planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation, with feed"=back and a clientele service delivery system to herd owners in pastoral communities. Project inception embraces a needs assessment and focus"=group discussions with pastoral communities, as well as awareness campaigns and sensitisation of all stakeholders - herd owners, government institutions, NGOs, CBOs, etc, where the entire scope and rationale for the programme are discussed. Pilot villages are randomly selected from different climate hot spots in arid lands. Detailed information to be stored in the database include indigenous and conventional knowledge systems related to adaptive breeding, novel livestock management practices under harsh climatic conditions, animal genetic resources, traditional breed characteristics in relation to animal survival in dry lands, seasonal trends in resource availability, pastoral landscapes and resource mapping, drought mitigation strategies, agro"=biodiversity, pasture and feed resources, and other pertinent information related to the livelihood base of pastoralists. The proposed CC adaptation livestock database also includes information related to institutional support systems (e.g. early warning, meteorological data/climate predictions), role of ICT and global best practices in climate change mitigation and adaptation strategies tailored to the needs of herders in arid lands. The resulting database system represents a repertoire of vital information needed for the design and implementation of robust CC adaptation measures specifically designed for low"=input livestock units in the face of climate oscillation and change. The framework prioritises feedback and a free clientele service delivery, to provide herd owners with current information on CC adaptation in highly unpredictable environments. }
